Remarks by Ambassador Osman Koray Ertaş at the Turkish Breakfast event on the occasion of World Breakfast Day
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Good morning and welcome to our World Breakfast Day celebration!
Just recently, we have celebrated the Turkish culinary richness in this residence during Turkish Cuisine Week, and it is now time to cherish the most important meal of the day by spotlighting a culinary treasure that has won hearts worldwide—Turkish breakfast, "kahvaltı".
“Kahvaltı” literally means the meal before or during the morning coffee. Turkish breakfast, known as is much more than just food; it's an experience, a tradition that brings people together to enjoy a symphony of flavors and scents.
It beautifully showcases Türkiye's rich culture and warm hospitality, encouraging everyone to enjoy the moment and connect over a shared table.
Central to a traditional Turkish breakfast is a variety of delightful dishes, each prepared with care and heritage.
Picture a table spread with an assortment of fresh cheeses, from the creamy “beyaz peynir” to the tangy “kaşar”. Imagine the inviting aroma of freshly baked bread, from “simit” to “pide”, ready to be paired with homemade jams.
An essential part of this meal is the “menemen”—a beautiful scramble of eggs, tomatoes, peppers, and spices that adds a burst of color and flavour, reflecting the lively spirit of Turkish cuisine.
Complementing these staples are olives, cucumbers, tomatoes, and an array of cured meats like “sucuk” and “pastırma”.
And let's not forget the endless supply of invigorating Turkish tea, served in delicate tulip-shaped glasses, warming both body and soul.
“Kahvaltı” is not just the food, but the experience of sharing it with loved ones. It's about taking time to enjoy each bite, to converse, laugh, and create memories.
In Türkiye, breakfast is a leisurely and joyful affair, not a rushed meal.
As we celebrate World Breakfast Day today, I invite you to immerse yourself in the richness of Turkish breakfast.
Let each bite transport you to the bustling streets of Istanbul or the beautiful landscapes of Cappadocia. Let the flavors tell the story of a culture that values hospitality and community.
Thank you for joining us. May this Turkish breakfast inspire you to slow down, savor, and appreciate the beauty of starting your day with a table full of love and friendship.
Enjoy, and afiyet olsun!
Thank you.
